The difference between Rutile and Ilmenite
Time: 2023-11-16 Source from: Titanos
Rutile and ilmenite are different minerals that are often found together.
While both minerals contain titanium, they have different chemical compositions and crystal structures
Ilmenite is a weakly magnetic dark gray mineral found in metamorphic and igneous rocks. It is a mixed oxide of iron and titanium, FeTiO3. On the other hand, rutile is the most frequent of the three polymorphs of titanium dioxide, crystallizing in the tetragonal system, TiO2.
In summary, the main differences between rutile and ilmenite are their chemical compositions and crystal structures. While ilmenite is a mixed oxide of iron and titanium, rutile is a polymorph of titanium dioxide.
