The advantage of Natural Rutile over Synthetic rutile

Time: 2023-11-14 Source from: Titanos
According to a report by Straits Research, the global market for rutile is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.2% over the forecast period. The report also states that most of the rutile production is invested in the manufacturing of refractory ceramic as a pigment in paints, paper, foods, and for the production of titanium metal.

Natural rutile is widely available in nature and is the cleanest, purest form of titanium dioxide. It is favored by pigment producers over higher energy and carbon-intensive “upgraded” titanium feedstocks such as synthetic rutile or titanium slag.

On the other hand, synthetic rutile is produced by processing ilmenite, a mineral that contains titanium and iron, through the Becher process. The resulting synthetic rutile is a high-quality product that is used in the production of titanium dioxide pigments, welding rods, and other products. Synthetic rutile is often preferred over natural rutile because it is purer and has a more consistent composition.

In terms of cost, synthetic rutile is generally less expensive than natural rutile. However, the cost of synthetic rutile can vary depending on the quality of the ilmenite used and the processing methods employed.

Therefore, the main advantage of natural rutile over synthetic rutile is that it is widely available in nature and is the cleanest, purest form of titanium dioxide. It is favored by pigment producers over higher energy and carbon-intensive “upgraded” titanium feedstocks such as synthetic rutile or titanium
Slag. However, synthetic rutile is often preferred over natural rutile because it is purer and has a more consistent composition. Additionally, synthetic rutile is generally less expensive than natural rutile.
