How is Zircon sand extracted and processed?

Time: 2023-11-15 Source from: Titanos

Zircon sand is a mineral raw material that is extracted from the earth’s crust. The industrial production of zircon is usually carried out from the zircon sands extracted by mining, which are processed into the so-called zircon concentrates. Zircon sand is a natural mixture consisting of zirconium oxide and silicon oxide. In small amounts, zircon sand also contains hafnium, aluminum, iron, and titanium oxides, as well as traces of uranium and thorium.

The process of extracting zircon from sand involves removing impurities from zircon ore and increasing the zircon grade. The beneficiation methods include gravity separation, magnetic separation, electrostatic selection, and flotation. The zircon sand concentrator is often divided into two parts: wet treatment and dry treatment.

Zircon sand is used to produce many engineering materials, including zirconia ceramics
