The difference between zircon sand and zirconium
Time: 2023-11-14 Source from: Titanos
Zircon sand and zirconium are two different things. Zircon sand is a mineral raw material that is extracted from the earth’s crust, while zirconium is a chemical element with the symbol Zr and atomic number 40. Zircon sand is a natural mixture consisting of zirconium oxide and silicon oxide, while zirconium is a lustrous, grayish-white metal that is often used in nuclear reactors and other high-temperature applications.
Zircon sand is used to produce many engineering materials, including zirconia ceramics, fused zirconia, zirconium chemicals, and zirconium metal. On the other hand, zirconium is used in the production of nuclear reactors as a neutron absorber, ceramic and refractory compounds, and alloyed with niobium, zinc, and other metals.
