Zircon sand application

Time: 2023-11-13 Source from: Titanos
Zircon sand is a naturally occurring mineral that is found in ancient mineral sand deposits. It is primarily composed of zirconium silicate (ZrSiO4) and is typically brown, but could also vary from colourless to yellow-golden, pink and red to blue and green. The majority of zircon sand is mined in Australia and the African continent, with current annual global production in excess of one million tonnes.

Zircon sand has a variety of applications, including:

• Foundry applications: Zircon sand is directly used in foundry applications as a moulding material due to its high refractoriness and thermal stability

• Refractories: Zircon sand is used in refractories to improve the thermal shock resistance of products.

• Ceramics: Zircon sand is used in ceramics to improve the mechanical strength and durability of products.

• Opacifier: Zircon sand is used as an opacifier in the production of ceramics, glass, and porcelain.

• Fused zirconia: Zircon sand is converted into fused zirconia, which is used in the production of refractories, ceramics, and abrasives

• Zirconium chemicals: Zircon sand is used to produce zirconium chemicals, which are used in the production of pigments, coatings, and catalysts

• Zirconium metal: Zircon sand is used to produce zirconium metal, which is used in the production of fuel cladding, chemical processing equipment, and other applications
