Water based wood paint film is not the harder the better

In the market of water-based wood coatings hardness is the most concerned index of many Chinese R&D personnel and users of water-based coatings .In the traditional concept, the harder the paint film, the better. Customers often ask if there is any way to make the paint film reach 2H or even 3H .Although the neutral properties of water-based wood coatings have increased rapidly in the past decades heir it’s hardness is still not as good as that of solvent based paints. As a research and development personnel of water-based coatings, if 2H and 3H are set as the standards for successful research and development, it Will be in vain for many years. I’m afraid we need to pay more attention to" how to improve the hardness of water-based wood paint film to 3H? but is the harder the water-based wood paint film, the better?

In fact, hardness reflects the ability of one material to resist indentation, scratching, cutting and penetration of another .

Hardness and scratch resistance and wear resistance: wear is the result of peeling off the material from the solid surface under the action of force when two solid surfaces contact. In addition to normal pressure, there is shear force during wear. When the two materials are in contact, the relatively soft surface is more likely to be scratched.

Scratch resistance reflects the surface properties of materials under large stress and short time. Scratch resistance is not only related to the hardness of the material, but also related to the toughness of the material.

Wear resistance refers to the degree of material peeling off from the matrix under the same stress conditions(temperature, humidity, contact medium external force and stress time). Like scratch resistance wear resistance is related to the hardness and toughness of materials, but it reflects the surface properties of materials under small stress and long time.

On the contrary, for the same type of polymer film, it has been found that the harder the film. the worse the wear resistance. In fact, the flexible coating has better wear resistance.

Conclusion: as a coating, hard and tough film is the best one
