MUNICH—Wacker Chemie A.G. said it has developed a modular system for pourable, addition-curing silicone rubber compounds called Elastosil Vario.

The reactivity of the silicone rubber and the hardness of the elastomer can be adjusted, according to the company, allowing the production of goods in any desired quantity.

Elastosil Vario, an addition-curing RTV-2 silicone rubber, can be used for encapsulating and coating, for making technical molded parts, and for mold making. The product consists of four modules: two different base components and two different catalyst components. The base components can be blended in any ratio, as can the catalysts, in the content needed for curing. The mixing ratios can be varied to match the silicone rubber system in the intended application. The mixing ratio for the two catalysts determines how reactive the system is and how fast the rubber cures.

Elastosil Vario is applied in electronic devices and circuits and coating of textiles and metal or plastic services. It also can be used in the production of gaskets and silicone mold parts, especially those in medical technology, according to Wacker.
