MOSCOW (MRC) - Imports of polypropylene (PP) in Russia decreased by 19% in the first six months of this year on the back of increased domestic production and weaker demand, as per MRC DataScope report.

June PP imports in Russia fell to 12,800 tonnes, compared with 15,300 tonnes in May. Russia"s PP imports totalled 87,400 tonnes in January - June 2014, compared with 108,400 tonnes year on year.  Imports volumes were affected by growing domestic production, which this year has exceeded 23%, as well as a slowdown in demand in key sectors of consumption. Structure of PP imports over the reported period was as follows.

June imports of homopolymer PP decreased to 2,900 tonnes, compared with 4,800 tonnes in May because of reduced supply of raffia from Turkmenistan. Total imports of homopolymer PP in Russia were about 30,000 tonnes in the first half of this year, down 34% year on year.

June imports of PP block copolymers were 3,900 tonnes, compared with 4,900 tonnes in May on the back of reduced supply of extrusion grades copolymers. Total imports of PP block copolymers decreased to 23,400 tonnes in the first six months of the year, compared with 27,800 tonnes year on year; the biggest reduction in the demand occurred for the producers of injection moulding products.

Imports of PP random copolymers in Russia were 2,600 tonnes in June, compared with 2,500 tonnes in May. Total imports of PP random copolymers in Russia decreased to 15,500 tonnes in January - June 2014, compared with 18,800 tonnes year on year because of increase in domestic production of injection moulding and pipe grades copolymers.

Imports of other polymers of propylene for the reported period decreased to 4,800 tonnes, compared with 5,600 tonnes in the same time a year earlier.
