The global coatings market in 2013 was over 38 million tonnes, with a value of more than EUR 90 billion. The largest share of the coatings market is in architectural coatings, accounting for 60% of global market demand.
The split between architectural and industrial coatings differs significantly for the three main regions of Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA), the Americas and Asia Pacific. The 2013 coatings market volumes in these three regions were mainly dominated by architectural coatings, which stood for 9,050,000 t in EMEA and 6,200,000 t in the Americas. Only the region Asia Pacific was still slightly dominated by Industrial Coatings with a volume of 8,050,000 t versus an architectural coatings volume of 7,550,000 t. The trend towards environmentally-friendly coatings has seen a growth in non-solventborne technologies in both architectural and industrial sectors, with waterborne coatings accounting for over 50% of the total global coatings market. However, the picture is very different between the Architectural and Industrial Coatings sectors.
