Bi Sheng, Director of Titanium Dioxide Sub-center of Chemical Industry Productivity Promotion Center of China, visits Titanos Group Headquarter on Feb 24. During a chat with Titanos Chairman Yang Tao, Bi says Chinese titanium dioxide market is facing several problems such as over-capacity, low industrial concentration, and insufficient technological innovation.

Based on detailed statistics by Titanium Dioxide Sub-center, Bi has made a comprehensive analysis of current domestic titanium dioxide industry. “In general, our titanium dioxide industry is seeing slow but steady growth,” Bi says. “But it will drag down the growth rate if we do not face or solve the problems we meet with.”

The first issue is over-capacity. No one would deny that Chinese titanium dioxide industry is undergoing severe over-capacity, but opinions vary when it comes to how severe it is.

“A misleading point of view is that current over-capacity problem is temporary and constructional,” Bi says. “It may be temporary, but definitely more than a constructional defect.” He believes that over-capacity is one of the primary issues hindering industrial development.

As for the chlorination process—one of the hottest subjects, Bi also states his own opinions. Though totally agree with the mainstream views that the efficient and environment-friendly chlorination process will be the basic manufacturing technique in China someday, Bi also warns that such day is unlikely to come within three years.

“Mere introduction is not enough for a new technology, we have to digest and grasp the core technologies to make full use of it,” Bi adds. “Cleaner production and more reasonable industrial chain are more urgent issues than imitation of foreign technology.”

“It is a long road, but we can expect bright prospects as long as we explore our own way with Chinese characteristics,” Bi says.
